The Seoul International Ultra-Training Competition (Seoul 100K) will be held on the 21st, a two-day, one-night event. Before the event, the organizers organized a beginner trail running class for beginners. Here, class participants run through Seoul's Hanyang Castle at night using lanterns.
The 2023 Seoul International Ultramarathon (Seoul 100K) will be held in the mountains of Seoul, South Korea, on April 21.
Trail running, a combination of trail and running, is a mountain leisure sport that involves running on unpaved trails, mountains, and grasslands, and has recently gained popularity among young people. This year's event also recruited 1,500 participants for three categories: 100km (200 participants), 50km (300 participants), and 10km (1000 participants), which closed early within two days. 37% of the participants were in their 30s, and 50% of the participants in the 10km category were in their 2030s. In particular, 37% of the participants in the 10km were women.
The course is a tough one, with a cumulative elevation gain of 4680 meters for 100 kilometers, 2840 meters for 50 kilometers, and 650 meters for 10 kilometers, but the oldest participant, Lee Jung-kyu (75), and the youngest, Ahn Sang-rok (15), participated in the 10 kilometers. Participants came from 16 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
All three categories started at Seoul Plaza and returned to Seoul Plaza. The 100km and 50km will start at 5am on the 21st, and the 10km at 8am. The 100 kilometers will run from Hanyangdoseong Fortress, Inwangsan Mountain, Bukhansan Mountain, Dobongsan Mountain, Suraksan Mountain, Bulamsan Mountain, Achasan Mountain, Hankang Parkway, and Cheonggyecheon, while the 50 kilometers will return from Hanyangdoseong Fortress, Inwangsan Mountain, Bukhansan Mountain, and Bukhaksan Mountain. The 10-kilometer course runs from Sejongdae-daero, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Samcheong Park, Bukhansan Mountain, and Inwangsan Mountain. For a detailed map of each course, visit the event website.
The time limit is 28 hours and 30 minutes for 100 kilometers, 14 hours for 50 kilometers, and 3 hours and 30 minutes for 10 kilometers. Runners will be timed by a chip attached to the back of their bib, and there will be hidden checkpoints (CPs) to prevent runners from taking shortcuts off the designated course. There is also a cut-off time for each section of the course.
As the event is held in a mountainous area, there are many precautions to be taken. Participants are required to download the "119 call" application before running. In case of a safety incident, they should quickly call the emergency number on the back of their bib. The organizers have also introduced an iShares location service for 100km and 50km participants. The organizers also organized beginner training classes for beginners. On the 4th and 11th, they held indoor training sessions and 10km course strategy training sessions to give participants a better understanding of trailer training. The organizers urged participants to be prepared for the cold as the temperature has dropped a lot recently and it is expected to get colder once they enter the mountain course.
Participants in the 100km and 50km races will be given an index to qualify for the world's premier trail running event, the UltraTrail Mont Blanc (UTMB), if they finish within the time limit. 19가이드03
