Jokhang Temple is located 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) southeast of the Potala Palace, in the center of the ancient city of Lhasa. It is also the oldest temple in Lhasa, with a history of more than 1,300 years. It was an important symbol of the Tubo dynasty at that time, and it is still the center of many important political and religious activities in Tibet.
Jowo Rinpoche or Jowo Shakyamuni is considered to be the most sacred and important Buddha statue in the eyes of Tibetans. This is a life-size Buddha statue of Sakyamuni enshrined in the Jokhang Temple. The Buddha statue of Shakyamuni was brought to Tibet when Buddhism was introduced to Tibet in the 7th century. This Buddha image is considered to have a direct connection with the Buddha and is also the most accurate portrait of Buddha Shakyamuni.
